Head Swim Coach

Dave Fine
davidandrew.fine@gmail.com

David (Dave) Fine’s passion for the sport of swimming is evident in his experience as both a swimmer and coach. Growing up, Dave swam for the New Canaan YMCA Caimans, West Hill high school, and his summer club, Newfield. During this time he earned recognition as a Junior National qualifier, YMCA national finalist, and was a team record holder for the NCY Caimans. At Newfield he was a FCSL county Champion in both swimming and Diving. His successful high school career led to his swimming for the University of Miami.

After his competitive swimming career ended, Dave continued to be involved in the sport, gaining recognition as one of the most enthusiastic and committed coaches in the county. This fall, Dave will be entering his 16th season as the New Canaan Girl’s High School head swimming coach, a team that has made significant waves at both the FCIAC and State level since he began coaching. In this time, Dave has led his girls’ team to numerous achievements, including 1 state title, 3 FCIAC titles, 9 state class runners‐up, and 5 State Open Runner Up Finishes. Dave was recognized for his success with the girls program, earning the FCIAC “Coach of the Year” award in 2009, 2010, and 2015, the CIAC “Coach of the Year” in 2011 and CHSCA “Coach of the Year” in 2014.

Dave is also the Head Coach of the New Canaan High Boy’s Swimming Team. He was the assistant coach from 2003 to 2009, where he has helped to lead the team to incredible success, garnering 8 State titles, 1 FCIAC title, 1 Open title as well as 9 FCIAC, 2 State and 6 Open runner‐up titles. Since taking over the team in 2012, he brought the Boy’s from a team that place 24th at the open meet back to a top contender, earning back to back Class L state titles in 2016 and 2017, an FCIAC runner up finish in 2017, an undefeated dual‐meet season in 2017, an accomplishment only 1 other school in the FCIAC has accomplished in more than 40 years, as well a top 3 finish at the 2017 State Open meet. Dave was name the FCIAC “Coach of the Year” in 2012 and 2017, and CIAC “Coach of the Year in 2016. In the 2015‐2016 season in the NISCA High School All‐ American dual meet Rankings, New Canaan Swimming was first in the nation for the Combined Girl’s and Boy’s point totals for schools of their Class size and 24 in the
nation overall.

In addition to his pivotal role in the New Canaan high school swimming programs, Dave has spent his summers as the head coach of Newfield for the last 16 years. During his tenure at Newfield, Dave has created a contagious, inviting, enthusiastic environment that promotes elites swimming and development swimming equally to achieve long lasting memories in the sport of swimming. He has helped drastically change the Newfield family from a 30 member team to over 180 athletes in the swim programs. Newfield has risen from division 3 club to a team that has been a staple in Division 1 for 8 consecutive years. Newfield was second overall in FCSL for the 2016 and 2017 dual meet season and has placed in the top 6 at the county Championship meet for the past 15 years with a runner up finish in 2017. Newfield also was the recipients of the Phil Goode Award (team of the year) in 2005 and David was the recipient of the Hope Carter Humanitarian Award in 2015 for his service to FCSL as the Coaches representative and league President. We are so excited to have Dave’s knowledge of stroke technique and conditioning, as well as his contagious commitment to and love of the sport.
