Newfield girls help power team to victory over Woodway, 15-7
The Newfield junior tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season with an impressive afternoon of tennis against the Woodway Country Club. The boys team, falling 6-5, proved to have one of the most intense meets in recent memory. Two matches were decided in tie-breakers, both going to Woodway. Aditya Krishnamachar played valiantly in his first match of the season, coming from behind the entire match to enter into the tie-breaker, and came only a few points short of winning. Derek Ward and Greyson Etheredge, playing on the other bookend of the tennis courts, were also locked into a duel in their seesaw affair. Their tie-breaker went into extended play to decide the outcome, falling 9-7 to Woodway. They exhibited great communication and a positive attitude despite the loss. :) Newfield boys were led again by their spectacular play in the 17's and 10's. Nick Morelli played his best match of the season, dismantling his opponent 8-1. Sam Sterman and Thomas Rosenfeld (fighting an injured finger) got off to a slow start, but roared midway to propel to a 8-2 win. Rex Elwell and Greyson Etheredge kept up their dominating ways, each not losing a single game this season! Both collecting 6-0 wins with their great play. Peter Grant and Glen Brown battled hard in the 14's but utlimately Woodway proved too tough to defeat. Liam Gorey and Devon Ward played perhaps Woodway's best doubles team in their match, losing 8-0, but took their loss in stride and displayed good sportsmanship. The Newfield girls had a much easier time of it, winning their meet in convincing fashion 10-1. Sarah Alptekin, Kyra Fitzpatrick, and Kendra Fitzpatrick all improved to 2-0 on the season with their solid performances. Kendra and Kyra also teamed up for their second straight doubles win. Allegra Molkenthin and Katarina Cucullo finished off the sweep in the 14's, pairing for a 8-6 victory in their doubles match. :) Suzie Alptekin pulled through in a squeeker 8-7, streaking away in the tie-breaker 7-3. Laura Schwartzman collected her first win of the season without dropping a game in her win, 8-0. Christina Molkenthin played her second consecutive solid match, winning 8-3. Nicole Welsh and Sarah Jane Clarke couldnt quite have enough to overcome Woodway, losing 8-3 in the 12's doubles category. The real nice surprise came with some stellar play in the 10's from first-timers Madison Ogilve and Jenna Handali - each collecting a hard fought victory. Madison winning 6-4 in a tight one, and Jenna claiming a win in the tie-breaker 7-4. :)
Newfield is now 2-0 on the season and plays a key match against the Italian Center next Thursday at 1. Girls are home, and boys are away! Come rout on our kids! :) |
